Since it has rained for 4.5 days here in Sunny South Florida, I needed some human comfort food.  An inspection of the garage freezer netted all the ingredients needed to make human pasta and meatballs.  That left the question of what to make for Coco.

You may be shocked to know that we often share the same meals.  I simply add more seasoning and sauce to my portion.  Sooooooo… since I was having meatballs, I need to make some for Coco as well.

Making Diva Dog Meatballs is super simple, use what you have in the fridge/freezer, keeping your dog’s tummy and any medical issues in mind.  Ingredients:

1/2 lb ground turkey (or chicken)

1/2 lb ground beef (I used 85% lean beef, you can use lamb or bison )

1/2 cup carrots shredded (or apples if your dog likes them better)

1/2 cup green beans frozen chopped up (green peas can be used instead)

1 Egg

1/2 table-spoon garlic (optional)

1 tsp parsley 

1/2 tsp cumin (Coco loves the smell of cumin and curry)

1 tsp extra virgin olive Oil

Mix all ingredients* well and scoop small meatballs onto a parchment lined baking dish.  Please don’t worry about making them perfectly round or pretty.  Dogs only care that food smells good and tastes good.  Only humans care what their food looks like.

How to make Diva Dog Meatballs from Dog Pack Snacks

Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 mins or until cooked through, ovens may vary.  Makes 25-30 little meatballs.  You can serve a few fully cooled meatballs over Rice with a tsp of cottage cheese or serve over Kibble.  PLEASE reduce the amount of kibble served when adding fresh food .

Diva Dog Meatballs from Dog Pack Snacks

*Note: you can add 1/2 cup of oatmeal to the mixture if you want a heartier meatball.  However, because I planned on serving with Rice and/or Pasta (OMD wheat), I did not add any carbs to the mixture.

I made a double batch of these and served the 2nd batch to the rescue dogs with their kibble.  They love it when I make dinner, because I always make it extra special.

Please note: These recipes are not ‘nutritionally complete’ as defined by the AAFCO*.  However, my dog Coco’s diet has been 90% home cooking for years with no problems for years.  I supplement her diet with fish oil, yogurt, cottage cheese, Dasuquin with MSM.

 If your dog is new to home cooked meals start slowly and consult your vet if your dog has any existing medical issues.

Before I begin… let me just say that if you are looking for a healthy, nutritious snack/meal, this is NOT the recipe for you.  This is just for fun and should be fed to your pup in moderation.

Ingredients:

- 2/3 cup quick cook oats

- 1/2 cup peanut butter

1 banana (smashed)

- 1/2 Tbsp black strap molasses (or honey if your pantry is sans molasses)

Simply mix all the ingredients together.  The result should be thick and a bit sticky.

 Use a large melon ball scoop to portion the individual truffles and use your hands to form the ball shape.

Place each truffle on a dish lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for 1.5 hours before serving.

If you really want your truffles to be Diva Dog worthy go for the toppings!    Word to the wise add the toppings BEFORE you refrigerate the truffles.  The first topping I tried was shaved coconut.  Grated coconut would have been a much better choice.   See the not so great result below.

I poured a small amount of coconut in a ramekin and then rolled each truffle around in the coconut and used my hands to smush (not a word, I know) the coconut into the truffle.  The second topping, carob powder was much easier.  I used the same technique but smushing was not necessary.

Again, this is just a fun treat recipe to use for special occasions or doggie parties; feed in moderation.  The idea is to have fun cooking for your dog and being able to give them a little something special.  If you want to make truffles for yourself and your humans friends take a look at this recipe.
