Happy Foodie Friday!! This week, I am making a treat specifically for one of the dogs in our Rescue, Drake (a/k/a Buster).  Drake LOVES salmon and pouted for days when the salmon based kibble was used up.  You just can’t reason with that boy when it comes to salmon.  He does not care that the rescue exists on donations.    So to avoid ‘Drake Drama’ I wanted to make a...

So to avoid ‘Drake Drama’ I wanted to make a crumbly type treat that would make a good food topper and entice Drake to eat at mealtime.  I hope this does the trick.

Ingredients:

1 -1/2 cups quick oatmeal

1/2 cup oat flour (or flour of your choice)

1/2 cup cooked ground chicken (or other ground meat of your choice)

1/2 cup shredded carrots

1 Egg

3 tbl Salmon Oil* or other fish oil formulated for dogs

1/4 cup water

Mix all the ingredients together to form a heavy sticky dough.  Use a medium scoop to divide the dough onto your baking dish.

Smush (yes smush) the middle of the ball down with your thumb so that it cooks evenly.  Bake at 35 degrees for 35-40 mins until golden brown at the edges.  Then let sit in the oven for an hour or two to dry out.  Let cool and serve as a treat or crumble over your dog’s food. This recipe make 14-16 med/lg salmon cakes.

Drake is one of the dogs with Have A Heart, Inc., A South Florida Rescue.  He is a fun and friendly guy.  He has no behavior issues but has been with us for 2.5 years waiting for a home.  Please feel free to share his photo and his link to help find him a home.

*A note on the Salmon Oil that I used.  I am not affiliated with the company in any way nor have I been compensated for including this product in this post.  Coco gets a squirt of Salmon oil every day for one week and then we switch to Anchovy/Sardine oil for a week, then back again.  Thus, the oil was already in my kitchen.  I wanted to use canned salmon, but could not find a brand that was low sodium.

The instructions on our Salmon oil indicates 1tbl spoon per 10lbs of dog daily.  I used 3 tbl for 16 cookies so I am well below the daily allowance in each cookie.  Read the label on your dog’s fish oil and adjust if necessary.
